Trading 212 is built around making investing accessible: a simple mobile and web interface, commission-free stock and ETF trading, fractional shares, and Pies for automated recurring investing.
Where it wins
- 0% commission on real stocks and ETFs
- Fractional shares with a β¬1 minimum
- Around 2,800 ETFs
- Recurring investing built into the product
- Genuinely the easiest of these platforms to start with
For someone putting β¬100ββ¬500 a month into an ETF, this combination is hard to beat on cost alone.
What "0% commission" leaves out
The headline is accurate but incomplete. Trading 212 charges a currency conversion fee whenever the instrument trades in a currency other than your account currency β which is most of the time if you hold US-listed shares in a EUR account.
That is why the comparison table shows two numbers rather than one:
Trading commission: 0%
FX conversion: applies
On β¬500 a month into a USD-denominated ETF from a EUR account, the FX fee is the only cost you pay β but it is not zero, and over a decade it is the line that matters.
The tax position
Trading 212's EU entity is not a Romanian tax-resident intermediary, so gains fall under the 16% self-declared regime for 2026 and you handle the reporting. Confirm the treatment against the specific legal entity your account is actually held with, since that is what determines it β not the country you live in or the language of the website.
The referral offer
Trading 212 runs an Invite a Friend program where both sides can receive a fractional share, documented at β¬8ββ¬100. Romania is explicitly among the eligible countries in the referral terms.
The catch matters: the program runs through specific promotional campaigns. Referral links are only valid during an active campaign, not every customer has a working link at any given moment, and the minimum deposit and deadline vary by campaign.
So: up to β¬100 in fractional shares when an eligible campaign is running β never a guaranteed β¬100.
Who it suits
Investors contributing small amounts monthly who want fractional shares and a simple interface, and who are comfortable declaring their own gains in Romania.
